I remember growing up in the GTA when winter seemed to arrive much earlier than it does now. Back then, by mid-November, the snow had already settled in, and a White Christmas was practically guaranteed. These days, while the cold starts creeping in around November, the real snow doesn’t seem to arrive until mid-January. This year was no exception—January hit us with a deep freeze courtesy of a polar vortex, and February followed up with storm after storm, dumping snow in rapid succession. And with more on the way this weekend, the old saying “In like a lion, out like a lamb” is on my mind. Here’s hoping that by the time spring rolls around on March 21, the weather decides to turn in our favor.

But winter isn’t just about the cold—it also brings flu season. Sly got hit hard this year, but after bouncing back, he’s been making up for lost time, hammering (musical metaphor intended) out new tunes on the piano with renewed energy.
This whole winter blues thing got me thinking, so I asked Lote and Sly a question: Are you more or less creative during the winter months?
- Sly’s take: “I think the winter isolation is good for creativity. Fewer distractions.”
- Lote’s take: “More idle time in the winter months for indoor activities, with music being at the forefront.”
For my part, I’ve been deep in mixing mode on our past projects, but I did manage to sneak in some songwriting last weekend. What I didn’t realize until afterward was just how much that creative burst lifted my spirits. Music truly is good for the soul. So, I guess I’m with Lote and Sly—winter doesn’t stifle creativity; if anything, it sharpens it by removing distractions.
Album Update
We’re now about two-thirds of the way through this album’s creative process, with just three songs left to go. The earlier tracks on this project leaned more into a rock-driven sound, but recently, I’ve noticed a shift toward a more introspective tone. I suspect this has a lot to do with the album’s theme, shaping the overall feel of the music. One thing’s for sure—this collection of songs is evolving into something that fits the concept perfectly.
What’s Next?
As we push through the last stretch of winter, I can feel the creative energy building, spring is a time of renewal. With just a few songs left to complete, we’re dialing in the final details and letting the theme of this album fully take shape. I’m always fascinated to see how a project evolves as we go—sometimes the music takes unexpected turns, and that’s part of what makes this process so rewarding.
Looking ahead, we’ll be sharing more behind-the-scenes glimpses, sneak peeks, and maybe even a few surprises. Stay tuned for updates, and if you haven’t already, make sure to follow us for the latest on our journey.
In the meantime, how do you handle the winter blues? Does music help you power through? Drop us a comment—we’d love to hear from you!
Spring is coming. New music is coming. And we can’t wait to share it with you.
Stay warm, stay inspired, and keep the music alive.
