The Story

Island of Misfit Songs – Origin Story & Album Description

Not every song is born for a concept album. Some arrive fully formed, carrying their own voice, their own story, and refusing to be bound by a single theme. Island of Misfit Songs is where those pieces find a home.

This ongoing EP by Six Foot Stilts is a creative refuge for tracks that stand apart. Songs that didn’t quite fit into the arcs of our themed albums, but deserved to be heard. It’s also a gathering place for rediscovered treasures from our RTZ days and solo works from each band member. Over time, it will grow into a shoreline where old friends and new creations meet, each adding to the island’s evolving character.

Here, there are no rules except one: if the song speaks, it belongs. From personal reflections to protest anthems, from playful storytelling to heartfelt tributes, the Island offers a diverse, unfiltered look at the range of voices within Six Foot Stilts.

This is where the misfits live… and where they shine.

The Island for Misfit Songs is an “in-progress” EP by SixFoot Stilts, diverging from the band’s tradition of concept albums to offer a collection of tracks that stand independently, each with its own story and message. This EP serves as a haven for songs that don’t fit the central themes of the band’s other works, showcasing the versatility and depth of their songwriting.

The EP opens with “Bulletproof,” a powerful protest song addressing the pervasive issue of gun violence in the USA. Inspired by the tragic shooting in Uvalde, Texas, this track combines evocative lyrics with a stirring melody to call for change and reflect on the impact of such events on society.

“Claire’s Lullaby” offers a contrasting tone with its gentle, soothing composition. Written for a baby girl in JawnyB’s family, this song is a heartfelt lullaby that encapsulates the tenderness and love that comes with welcoming new life into the world. Its simple yet profound lyrics and melody create a comforting and timeless piece.

The third track, “What’s Good About Today,” is a tribute to Christian Cochran, who left a significant positive impact in his short life before succumbing to cancer in his early twenties. The song reflects on his legacy and the enduring inspiration he provided to those who knew him. It celebrates the importance of cherishing each day and finding the good amidst life’s challenges. The Island for Misfit Songs is a collection that allows each track to shine on its own, providing a diverse listening experience that spans social issues, personal reflections, and heartfelt tributes.

Bullet Proof

In the land of the free home of the brave a once united nation torn apart by rage
Beneath the shadows unthinkable pain
Trudging through the sorrow of this bitter reign

I used to think I was invincible gun in hand protecting principles
Now’s the time to take a stand make a change across this land
We elected a ship of fools beholden to the NRA rules
All they do is stand around while all innocents get gunned down

Bulletproof we stand as one in harmony we rise
Brother’s, sister’s, daughter’s, son’s, don’t believe their lies
No more silence, no more tears, no more days of dread
Bulletproof we’ll make the change for the love of those who bled
For the love of those long dead

Sick and tired of talk and prayer empty words are the betrayer
We need action we need care to end the violence and despair
The fools on the hill drunk on power and greed ignore the children as they bleed
But hand in hand we’ll beat this storm rise from the ashes to a land reborn

Beneath the shadows unimaginable pain
Trudge through the sorrow of this bitter reign
No beacon of light instead we cry we’ll never forget the one’s that died

Bulletproof we stand as one in harmony we rise
Brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, don’t believe their lies
No more silence, no more tears, no more days of dread
Bulletproof we’ll make the change for the love of those who bled For the love of those long dead

What's Good About Today

In the morning light where dreams fade in the night
There’s a whisper in the air my direction crystal clear
You don’t own me I won’t be brought to my knees
Every dawn a blank slate not one minute will I waste

What’s good about today with a hopeful heart I say
Every moment has a beacon of light even on the darkest nights

Under a late day sun the shadows begin to run
Watching as they take their flight I dig in ready for the fight
All the smiles that we share all the ways that we care
Gives me the strength that I need to be everything I can be

What’s good about today with a hopeful heart I say
Every moment has a beacon of light even on the darkest nights
So what’s good about today with hopeful heart I say
If my journey should comes to pass it was glorious to the last

We find the strength to carry on in the all the love that lingers on
We find the strength to carry on in the all the love that lingers on

What’s good about today with a hopeful heart I say
Every moment has a beacon light even on the darkest nights
So what’s good about today with hopeful heart I say
If my journey should come to pass it was glorious to the last

Lifeline

I’ve seen bitter days they were cold and black
Got to close to the edge been through hell and back
And all these scars I have all the pain you see
It does not compare to what lies underneath

I saw the hope in your eyes
This may sound weird but it felt like you threw me a lifeline
Life lifeline a lifeline

I scratched and crawled and made my way back to the light
Never count me out you know I won’t give in without a fight

The road is long and hard seen the depths of despair
I’ll keep moving on as long as you are there
Been through highs and lows either sink or swim
Battles won and lost but it’s the war I’ll win

I saw the hope in your eyes
This may sound weird but it felt like you threw me a lifeline
Life lifeline a lifeline

Cadillac Jack

Cadillac Jack got his hair slicked back, he’s the poster boy for cool
A shameless flirt in a button-down shirt, he ain’t nobody’s fool
Look at the wheels he’s driving,
Will he succeed without trying?
How can you say this boy ain’t smooth

Jack and Bruce are on the loose, they’re looking to make a score
The Cadillac’s juiced, wearing platform boots, they got four on the floor
Look at the wheels he’s driving
Will he succeed without trying?
How can he say this boy, ain’t smooth

Sandy and Jen are with Jack and his friend; they stopped in for a sub
Sandy plays it cool, with the boys from the school, to whom she’ll give her love
Jack didn’t stand a chance
There will be no romance
He couldn’t know that he’d take a fall

I know I could love you, Jack
But I gotta go back
There’s a guy back there
For whose children I’ll bear
And that’s a fact
Best of luck, Jack

Jack didn’t stand a chance
There would be no romance
He couldn’t know that he’d take the fall

Mighty John White

Many years ago in the land of the great tall bluff
Was born the legend of the might John White
With that crooked Irish smile he charmed many a lass
And his legend spread far and wide for his fabled gas

Mighty John White, could belch all night
Can’t you hear the sound echo down Thompson hallways

He spent his teenage years at the school where the redmen dwell
Frequently out the door at the ring of the final bell
If you think he was rather dull you would be wong about that
For he could gush a formidable burp at the drop of a hat

Mighty John White, could belch all night
Can’t you hear the sound echo down Thompson hallways

When all the John White fans have met at the Broom & Stone
Gulping beer and making cheer until their oats are sewn
John would guzzle his final quaff and then dip his chin
Marshal his strength and then let loose
With a blast that would make your head spin

Mighty John White, could belch all night
Can’t you hear the sound echo down Thompson hallways
Mighty John White, mighty John White, mighty John White

Time for a Change

The cars are rumbling down the tracks, you got your ticket to ride
The train is rather full today, there’s a girl by your side
You want to tell her my name is Rudy but your tongue is tied
So you sit with your head in a book where you can run and hide

You’ve been riding that train so long, the movie’s rather strange
But you’re getting close to the station, it’s time to change

She sits and stares out through the window, not a sound she’ll make
Something heavy weighs on her shoulders, as she ponders her fate
I know you heard that good things come to those that wait
But you know it’s also said that fortune favours the brave

You’ve been riding that train so long, it’s rather strange
But you’re getting close to the station, it’s time to change

I know you heard that good things come to those that wait
But you know it’s also said that fortune favours the brave
